Conferences are dangerous places. Spending a few days away from your family and routine, in very close contact with intellectually stimulating people who understand your work without needing an introduction, can do funny things to your mind and body. Especially if you've been in a relationship very long. Especially if you are starting to think that you won't retain your looks for ever. Especially if you discover that you miss that tingling in your stomach, the thrill of not being sure, of mixed messages, of penetrating looks. Of course nothing happens, and you go back to your normal life, and then the unease and the longing slowly quiet down. But the question remains: are you never going to feel that way again? But what would happen if you did? |
